Nongogo

The Market Theatre presents Athol Fugard’s Nongogo directed by James Ngcobo.

Set in a township shebeen in the 1950’s vibrant yet turbulent time in South Africa, Nongogo is a tale of characters gripped by a futile longing to belong and be loved.

Johnny-the itinerate salesman, Queenie-the reformed hooker making good in her new career: Shebeen queen, Patrick–the tyrant pimp crippled by his jealousy of Queenie & Johnny’s promising romance, and Sam, whose physical disabilities mirror his broken spirit.
