BLACKSMITH - WOMAD TheMarket Theatre

The Market Theatre Foundation in collaboration with Arts Alive International Festival 2023,Arts, Culture and Heritage Presents The 2022 Zwakala Festival Winner production Blacksmith as part of the Arts Alive International Arts Festival programme which seeks to feature an array of creative offering to activate the artistic landscape.

Blacksmith seeks to address the issue of mental slavery amongst Africans. Using inventive mask work and incorporating a live musician, we witness a man placed in a position as a custodian of African History. The work wrestles with events that have changed the African course of history in the face of colonialism and acts of white supremacy.
This production has emerged through the Incubation Programme sponsored by the Department of Sports Arts and Culture. Through this programme the department aims to help emerging practitioners to hone their skills. The process also puts a strong emphasis on home-grown content to generate exciting new productions, like Blacksmith, for the theatre-going public.
