The UCT Surgical Society cordially invites you to our third prestigious Charity Ball. The beneficiary for our fundraiser this year is the Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) Trust. GSH is a premier tertiary academic hospital located in Cape Town, renowned for its pioneering medical achievements. Due to the recent Western Cape budget cuts and austerity measures, GSH faces the challenge of being unable to meet the demands for emergency surgical procedures. In response, the Trust has launched the "Emergency Funds for Emergency Surgery" initiative. In 2023, GSH conducted over 6,000 emergency operations, many of which experienced delays due to limited resources.
The "Emergency Funds for Emergency Surgery" project seeks to alleviate these delays by increasing surgical capacity, thereby reducing waiting times and improving patient outcomes. The initiative plans to add 70 additional emergency theatre lists annually, which will accommodate an extra 200-220 emergency surgeries. This will significantly reduce backlog and ensure timeous treatment for urgent cases.
