Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses is a unique, visceral theatrical experience that takes place in and around a rectangular pool of water, with eight actors playing out a vivid adaptation of nine Greek and Roman myths featured in Ovid’s epic poem of the same title.
These magical and compelling tales of transformation feature fascinating characters such as Midas, Orpheus, Aphrodite and Eros, and explore what it is to be human: to love, to lose, to laugh and to lament.
Director Steven Stead (The Sound of Music), tackles these classic tales with a tone that is epic and intimate, enigmatically mythical, prosaically funny, but always compelling and entertaining. It is sensual and playful in equal measures; occasionally terrifying, and disturbing.
The physical and emotional intensity of the performances, and the visual beauty of the images that the actors conjure, will leave an audience spell-bound and deeply satisfied.
