About

The play is set in a fictional world where our character Qhawe has to navigate himself between finding his long lost lover (Zinkwenkwezi) and having to carry the responsibility of keeping the lights on for the deprived Zikhali community that lives in shafts underground. He cannot leave to seek for her in The Capital (where gentrification is law) and cannot afford to stay in the stifling environment where dreams and aspirations are captured by darkness. A plague had fallen upon the citizens of the country of many colours.
Propaganda from The Capital suggests that the world’s nuclear energy had depleted and the powerhouses descended upon them. Coal is the biggest currency and the architecture/agitator of the new war. Land and its inhabitants are casualties as the less privileged are forced under ground. It is said that radiation is what is forcing people to move underground. Land excavation for coal leaves gaping holes and people underground are left to scramble for what is left. The karoo’s natural gas build an empire on the surface, which we now know as “The Capital” and the centre of power. Qhawe as an innovator is the beacon of hope for the people of Zikhali. His love and passion for his wife keeps him resilient and her illusive presence sinks him in a pit of misery. His dilemma to choose between finding his love and his loyalty to his people leaves him in limbo. Where to from here?
