The annual Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition, this year in its 35th year, has undoubtedly become one of the highlights on the music scene for young prodigies. The competition is the brainchild of Professor Hubert van der Spuy, former chairman of the South African Society of Music Teachers (Tygerberg Branch) & widely respected music educator.
The instrumental competition is currently the only one of its kind in South Africa and offers a unique opportunity for children aged 13 years and younger to compete against their peers from all across the nation. Several previous winners of the competition have not only gone on to study music at tertiary level, but have also in turn become critically acclaimed performers and educators themselves. On occasion, others have returned to the competition as esteemed members of the jury panel.
