Nomzamo, a widower mourning her husband's death from silicosis developed in the mines, communicates her grief via the rhythmic intensity of gumboot dance, which represents the hard realities of mining life.
The performance also addresses the issues that black women experience, including gender-based violence (GBV). Symbolic dance and movement depict their bravery and vulnerability, encouraging the audience to confront and resolve this pressing issue.
Moving on to the dilemma of overworked and underpaid truck workers, their sufferings are conveyed by the harmonic notes of scathamiya and the vibrant beats of mbaqanga. Their testimonies sound like a chorus of voices demanding dignity and fair treatment.
As the performance reaches its peak, traditional and contemporary dance combine in a stunning recovery of what has been stolen from the continent and the black nation. The piece closes triumphantly with song and dancing, asserting identity, solidarity, and perseverance.
