Robert Schumann (1810-56) was one of the most loved and imaginative piano music composers of the Romantic period. Often misunderstood during his lifetime, the very works that initially puzzled 19-century audiences now stand amongst the most popular staples of the modern concert repertoire. By contrast, some works deliberately geared towards his contemporaries now stand in comparative oblivion.
Renowned South African pianist, Pieter Grobler, has long been fascinated by this composer and took advantage of the opportunity to devote an entire programme to his works. In this recital in the Endler Hall, the audience will enjoy 2 giant staples of the Romantic piano repertoire (Carnival Opus 9 and the Fantasy Opus 17), complimented with lesser-known songs, transcribed late in life in the expert hand of Franz Liszt, together with other treasures. In so doing the audience enjoys a varied glimpse into the almost inexhaustible riches of Robert Schumann’s piano music.
