The inaugural event will take place at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town, followed by the next phase at Joburg Theatre, with future legs planned for other regions such as Durban, Bloemfontein, and Gqeberha. The competition will offer dancers from across the country the opportunity to perform on prestigious stages, blending Amapiano’s energetic, street-originated dance style with the professionalism of theatre performance.
More than just a contest, the Amapiano Dance Championship aims to empower young, emerging dancers, particularly those from disadvantaged communities. It provides participants with a life-changing opportunity to learn, grow, and be exposed to professional platforms they may not have previously accessed. Each dancer or group will benefit from professional theatre craft workshops worth R25,000, covering skills like choreography, lighting and sound design, costume creation, and navigating the entertainment business.
The event features regional qualifiers leading to a national showdown, with participants battling it out for the grand prize of R50,000, trophies, and the title of Amapiano Champion.
