iPhupho L’ka Biko is an Africanist jazz band, that was founded in the year 2015 in the corridors of the University of Witwatersrand by alumnus Nhlanhla Ngqaqu. Through music, iPhupho L’ka Biko aims to conscientize and spiritually awaken the human race globally. The band explores three themes in the main, Spirituality, Black Consciousness, and the Jazz Tradition. Sonically, the band fuses jazz with indigenous African music of imvumane and igwijo and elements of religious music. For those who have been to a live iPhupho show it is a coming together in healing, love, prayer, unity, history, and the revolution. In this instalment of one of its idiosyncratic offerings, iPhupho invites aBahlali to
journey through moments in history that are fundamental to where we find ourselves. It is also a symbolic moment for the band, as they return “home” to Wits having recently released their debut EP titled AZANIA.
uNxele noMaqoma are important ancestors in tracing the journey of the African people and their history with resisting displacement and dispossession. At the center of their resistance against colonialism it has been identity, land, and cattle (economic liberation) for the African people, these are struggles that have held true from many generations back to this day. On this night the band will be joined by three great poets Makhafula Vilakazi, Sabelo Soko and Kgafela oa Magogodi, who will depict in words and metaphors this history.
