Karatara

About

middle of the night, a blazing inferno incinerated a small town. The residents lost everything, some even their lives.

This deeply personal inter-disciplinary dance-drama deals with the loss of family, home, community and land. It looks at the complex racial and social politics of the area and explores the role and power of the media. We see a family struggling to make sense of an atrocity amidst the opportunism and greed others find in a tragedy.

“Die Karatara rivier, boetie. The deep dark place. Hy sluk alles in. Al die neighbourhoods langs hierdie swart slang in die Outeniqua – húlle sluk al alles vir jare en jare en jare”.
This production has won: Best Debut Production at KKNK 2022, the Fiësta award for Best Design and 2 Fleur du Cap awards for Best Sound Design & Best Lighting Design.
