Our play is an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's Dairy of a Madman which Gogol wrote in 1836. Now, set in Cape Town, South Africa, Thabo Kani, played by Bizo Maxegwana (Best Actor Award 2024 48hrMovieProject) is a secretary in parliament. In believing he is the next leader of South Africa, Thabo at times, comically creates events which he believes are true.
In trusting Gogol's literary style the actor has brought the period forward to the present...and future.
Thabo's frustration is amplified by the destruction of the South African government and the brokenness of the system. As Thabo becomes enemy number one to the state, he becomes an enemy to his own sanity.
