The 22nd annual voice competition is sponsored by the Schock Foundation. The competition is open to full-time students of the SACM. Students compete for prizes in the following categories: Best South African Song, Best Opera Aria, Best Art Song, Best Song from an Oratorio and there is an Audience Prize! The competition is adjudicated by a panel of widely recognised and experienced professional musicians.

The Schock Foundation was established by the late Judge Philip Schock to assist and support charities and educational institutions in South Africa. The family's love of the arts led to the inaugural Schock Foundation Singing Competition for outstanding UCT students in 2002.
